Children’s Books About Developmental Language Disorder

for Families, Educators, and Professionals

TRICOAST Adventures is a children’s book series created to help children and families better understand Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and other learning differences through storytelling, friendship, and imagination. Set in the heart of the TRICOAST coastal forest, each story follows lovable woodland characters like Drew L. Dandelion, Lily Ladybug, Sammy Salmon, and their friends as they navigate challenges, discover their strengths, and learn new ways to communicate, connect, and grow.

The TRICOAST Adventures series was created to help children feel seen, understood, and supported. Each book gently introduces real language and learning challenges individuals with DLD may have in a way that is warm, empowering, and easy for children to relate to. Rooted in research and inspired by connection, these stories are designed to spark meaningful conversations at home, in classrooms, and in therapy, while reminding every child that their voice, ideas, and ways of learning matter.

Lily the Ladybug loves exploring the forest and sharing her discoveries, but when it comes to following instructions, the steps get all mixed up in her mind. This leaves her feeling unsure of what to do next. Everything begins to change when Oliver the wise owl gives Lily a special notebook. With help from her friends Drew, Sammy, and Maya, Lily learns three simple strategies: ask for help, take your time, and number the steps. As Lily uses her notebook to plant seedlings and create a Forest Map, she makes an incredible discovery. What once felt hard becomes her special talent! Will Lily’s new strategies help her when the steps get trickier? How will her notebook help all the forest friends work together? With courage, learning, and a little forest magic, Lily finds her own way to shine. This heartwarming story shows that everyone can feel confident and capable with the right help and practice.

What readers are saying...

"I got this book for the boys today! Both boys were excited to read it and both commented on how the illustrations were very colourful. Emmett enjoyed the story and finished it quickly, Robbie waited until before bed and also enjoyed it. Emmett deals with some of the same topics that this book talks about, language!

He sometimes has to think through what he wants to say, but even then, it can still be hard to get out! We were able to talk about the story and how Drew was kinda the same as Emmett. This was an absolute hit and I cannot wait to give the second copy to the SLP dept this week! Wonderful accomplishment!"
